When You Don't Want Advice—You Just Want Someone to Listen

Advice can arrive before you have had a chance to understand what you feel. It is reasonable to ask for a different kind of support.

Make the request explicit

Try: “Could you listen for a few minutes without trying to solve this?” or “I may want ideas later, but right now I need company.”

Say what would help

A quiet presence, a reflective question, or a simple acknowledgement may help more than a list of solutions. Different people need different forms of listening.

Leave room for safety

If the situation involves immediate risk, advice and urgent action may be necessary. A listening request should not delay emergency or professional support.
